Spring 2019

The SNA officers share a passion for continuing to find new ways to better the organization each semester and bring something meaningful, helpful, and fun to its members.
Natalia 2.jpeg
President
Natalia Henao

Natalia loves traveling - especially trips that include anything Disney or camping and hiking. At the University of Houston, Natalia is studying nutrition and believes this subject spans much further than food. She recognizes nutrition as chemistry, history, and a way to bring people together as well as a tool to prevent disease and help people feel their best. Through SNA, Natalia found job opportunities in the nutrition field, new friends, and the ability to grow and help her peers. As the Spring 2019 President, Natalia is excited to share her experiences and resources with UH students interested in nutrition.

Abby Ortega
Vice President

Abby also enjoys traveling. So far, Abby has visited over 20 U.S. states and will be leaving the country for the first time this spring as she joins Dr. Haubrick's study abroad trip to Italy! Abby comes from a family with different dietary needs and has grown to love the healthy lifestyle they lead. After completing her degree in nutrition, Abby hopes to be able to promote healthy, preventative lifestyles and lessen the amount of medication and supplementation needed. She is passionate about reaching as many people as possible and helping them live their healthiest lives. As Vice President this spring, Abby can't wait to get to know the SNA members better and be part of the organization's growth.

Carlos.jpg
Treasurer
Carlos Moreno

Carlos loves to cook, especially delicious Salvadorean dishes like pupusas! As Carlos watched the obesity epidemic take hold in his hometown near Dallas, he was inspired to study nutrition. With this education, Carlos hopes to be able to improve the overall health of his community as well as his own. Carlos has enjoyed being part of an organization that brings him closer to a group of individuals who cares about nutrition. As Treasurer, Carlos has expanded SNA's financial abilities, and this spring, he aims to allocate more funds to support and grow the group's planned events.

Lauren Roper
Secretary

As a native Houstonian, Lauren has always enjoyed the diversity among both the people of our great city and the foods they share. Lauren loves to cook, especially southern comfort foods, and host game nights.  She has always been curious about nutrition and can remember often scanning nutrition labels to try to understand what made foods healthy or unhealthy. As a nutrition professional, Lauren will aim to make a difference by teaching people how they can enjoy foods that fit into a healthy lifestyle. Lauren hopes to get to know SNA members who share a similar passion in food and nutrition and use her role as Spring 2019 Secretary to keep an open dialog between SNA officers and members as we work together to grow the organization.

Alyssa.jpg
Historian
Alyssa Newberry

Alyssa is a career changer. She left her desk job in the oil industry to study nutrition after having previously received a degree in History. She loves to learn both in the classroom and through travel and experience. Her experience in the 9-5 lifestyle brought her face to face with the diet culture of our country and gave her a glimpse into the lives of those who struggle with dieting. Alyssa hopes to alleviate the stress of dieting and promote healthier relationships with food among working class Americans. As the Spring 2019 Historian, Alyssa is excited to showcase the wonderful things SNA members will be doing in and around campus to promote nutrition.

Alex.jpeg
Volunteer Coordinator
Alex Rodriguez

Alex appreciates the wealth of knowledge and great experience to be gained from traveling, and he enjoys hiking, especially through mountains. In studying nutrition, Alex aims to better himself and others both mentally and physically. Recognizing the vast number of opportunities for application of his nutrition education, Alex hopes to practice as a nutrition professional with a combination of community and sports nutrition. As the Spring 2019 Volunteer Coordinator, Alex is excited to focus on bringing all members of the organization closer together to build genuine relationships between classmates and colleagues.

Valeria.jpg
Lively Eating Coordinator
Valeria Gallegos

In her spare time, Valeria loves going outside for a nice run! She loves learning about nutrition and is enamored by the way nutrition works. Valeria has grown to love learning about how nutrition can have such a big impact on people's lives and hopes to continue to see this impact throughout her career. As our first ever Lively Eating Coordinator, Valeria will work with members to plan our Lively Eating cooking demonstrations. During this experience, Valeria hopes to encourage more involvement and help members and officers get to know each other and build relationships.
